Before the Great War, these spectacular Cornish gardens were a thriving paradise. Tragically, so many of the gardening staff died in the conflict and the gardens fell into ruin. After a chance discovery of a door in the ruins, archaeologist Tim Smith set about restoring them to their former glory in the 1990s – his efforts described by The Times as ‘the garden restoration of the century’.
