Description

This broadcast quality film features the Dartmouth Steam Railway and The South Devon Railway – both filmed in perfect weather. The first part features the Torbay Railway with Prairie Tanker 4588 and Lydham Manor. The second concentrates on the Dart Valley Line and follows GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 1638 on a return trip from Buckfastleigh to Totnes Riverside.

Filmed by Graham Whistler Productions in 1990 the broadcast quality film is today 16.7.15 remastered from the original tapes to a very high standard and is now available for the first time as a DVD. Both the now called Dartmouth Steam Railway and The South Devon Railway are featured. Filmed in perfect summer weather featuring 3 GWR Steam Locomotives. This new reissue in DVD is not to be missed. Both the Paignton (Torbay) to Kingswear and Buckfastleigh (Dart Valley) lines are featured. Each line is 7 miles long and in the Great Western Railway tradition. The first part features the Torbay railway and features GWR steam locomotives “Lydham Manor” 7827 4-6-2 and Prarie Tanker 4588. Both locos are seen working hard on steep gradients with dramatic lineside as well as footplate action. The last 20 minutes of the film shows the Dart Valley Line and we follow GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 1638 on a return trip from Buckfastleigh to Totnes Riverside. This typical Great Western branch line with glorious coutry and riverside settings. The voice over was written by Peter Van Zeller and narrated by Jack Watson. The film was shot on broadcast Sony equipment in 1989 with camera work and direction by Graham Whistler. Since we made this film in 1989 the railways have been renamed: “Dartmouth Steam Railway” (Torbay Line) and “South Devon Railway” (Buckfastleigh Line). In 2015 the film has been digitally edited and remastered to modern DVD standards.
