Description

Jeff Vinter, previous chairman of Railway Ramblers and consultant on the BBC’s Railway Walks series, guides the walker along 10 of the best railway paths in the South of England, ranging from the Plym Valley Railway Path and Cycle Route on the southern slopes of Dartmoor to the densely-wooded tracks of the Forest of Dean, and taking the Downs Link across the rolling countryside of West Sussex and Surrey, and the Camel Trail in Cornwall.

<The “armchair walker” is also catered for, with each chapter being prefaced with a full historical description of the line and a resumé of its regeneration after closure. Together with Railway Walks: GWR & SR, all you need are a map and a pair of stout boots—and some reasonable weather—in order to enjoy this fascinating and rather different aspect of the English countryside.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY

Jeff Vinter read history at Exeter University, where he joined the university’s Railway Society and started to explore the West of England’s closed rail network in the wake of Dr Beeching’s infamous axe. In the 1990s, he wrote four volumes in the ‘Railway Walks’ series and, more recently, has acted as consultant to a number of television series about disused railway lines, most notably ‘Along These Lines’ for Meridian and ‘Railway Walks’ for BBC 2 and 4, and most recently James May’s Toy Stories. He was President of the Railway Ramblers Society and now oversees their website, as well as regularly conducting talks and walks along railway routes across the country.
