This fifth volume in ‘A Train Spotter’s Notebook’ series covers the North East from Manchester to Edinburgh and down to Retford. The route across the Pennines via Barnard Castle and Bowes with steam hauled service trains is explored along with scenes at Kirkby Stephen East, West and Junction and the viaducts at Lartington and Belah. A trip is taken by DMU on the last day of the Middleton in Teesdale service. Filmed from 1962, all types of trains from freight to express passenger, the majority of which are lineside shots, are depicted. Included are a few enthusiasts specials with some interesting locomotives and some depot scenes. Classes filmed include various Midland and Standard types along with WDs, A4, A3, A2/3, A1, V2, V3, B1, B16, B16/2, B16/3, K1, K3, J21, J27, J72, J94, Q6, Q7, 01, 02, 04/7, 04/8 and ES1.

Steam is seen at locations such as Manchester Victoria, Exchange, Central and Piccadilly, Hawick, Edinburgh Waverley, Berwick upon Tweed, the Alnwick branch, Newcastle Central, Blyth, Percy Main, Pelaw, the Tyne Dock – Consett iron ore trains, Hesleden, Eston, Hartlepool, Billingham, Seaton Carew, Durham, the Bear Park – Rowley line, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Guisborough, Cargo Fleet, Nunthorpe, Eaglescliffe, Croft Spa, Cowton, Northallerton, the Leyburn – Hawes route, the Filey Line, York, Holgate, Selby, Retford, Leeds and Skipton.

All scenes have been digitally enhanced to improve picture quality and sound tracks added as accurately as possible. The informative narration is designed to minimise intrusion of the locomotive sound tracks and captions added where appropriate.
