The Welsh Highland Railway is a narrow gauge steam line which runs for 25 beautiful miles from Porthmadog to Caernarfon over the scenic Aberglaslyn Pass. Travel its length on board Locomotive 143, a former South African Railways Class NG/G16 Garratt, the last engine built by Beyer, Peacock & Co. of Manchester in 1958.

Your journey will be memorable, beginning with a short stretch across the road bridge over the Afon Glaslyn in Porthmadog as cars and buses give way to us. There follows an unusual level crossing over the standard gauge Cambrian Railways line operated by Network Rail at Caw Pawb before the climb begins. The track is never straight for long as it uses the contours of the hillsides to ease the ascent. But despite this we’re forced to resort to tunnels four times in the section between Nantmor and Beddgelert. The countryside is harsh, but the views are stunning, and this journey is a testament to the engineering skills of those who built it from 1863, and those who restored and extended it.
