There are actually three junctions here, with four-track running increasing to six and both electrified and non-electrified lines. Full description from the producer:
Sunrise Sunset UK spends a full day at a busy and popular location, recording a typical day of passenger and freight trains.
On the East Coast Mainline, 5.5 miles south of York, 27 miles north of Doncaster and 20 miles east of Leeds is Colton Junction. There are actually three junctions here, with four track running increasing to six and both electrified and non electrified lines.
This part of the country has seen a transformation of its railways in recent years with the brand new Class 800, 801 and 802 IEP units introduced, as well as the Class 195 ‘Civity’ DMUs and the Class 68-hauled Mk 5 TPE services.
Adding to this is a mixture of freight with biomass, waste, containers, gypsum and steel trains, hauled by Class 60s and 66s.
Filmed on a fine sunny 21st July 2020, shortly after the increase in services following lockdown, as well as the new trains mentioned above Class 91s and Mk 4 sets can still be seen, into their final days on Kings Cross – Edinburgh services and the shorter Kings Cross – York workings; Class 155s work the York to Hull services, with 185s working Redcar to Manchester Airport and Class 220 and 221 Voyagers on Cross Country, plus two Cross Country HSTs. A Class 180 is recorded, with a TPE Mk 5 set in top and tail mode and 37218 passes on an engineers train.
