Description
Werrington Junction is situated on the ECML, three miles north of Peterborough. A major engineering project was completed here in 2021, providing a new ‘dive under’ for trains – mostly freight – heading to/from Lincoln. Mostly filmed from the main bridge, this turned out to be fantastic day and as well as what was expected, two Class 33s, a 37, 47, 50 and 57 passed through!
Full description from the producer:
Sunrise Sunset UK spends a full day at a busy and popular location, recording a typical day of passenger and freight trains.
On the East Coast Mainline, three miles north of Peterborough and 76.5 miles south of Doncaster is Werrington Junction. For many years it was just another junction on the ECML, taking a branch line, known as the ‘Joint Line’, towards Spalding and Lincoln.
In 2021 a major engineering project was completed. Known as the Werrington Grade Separation this provided a new ‘dive under’ for trains – mostly freight – heading to/from Lincoln, duly increasing capacity on the ECML and avoiding conflicting moves. In addition, a huge public footbridge was built literally over this new ‘dive under’, offering a birds-eye view of all passing trains.
With a seven-track layout and more than 200-trains passing on any given day, our cameras filmed a typical day from 7th June 2022. What unfolded over a 14-hour period was quite remarkable!
LNER provide the majority of passenger trains with their Azuma units complemented by five Class 91 hauled diagrams – all five are featured. Add Hull trains, Grand Central and new operator Lumo plus EMR and Cross Country and that’s eight different types of unit. Most of the freight is containers, hauled by GBRf, Freightliner and DB Cargo Class 66s, plus stone, ballast and a few other flows.
Mostly filmed from the main bridge at Werrington, with additional footage from the first bridge on the Spalding line and the next bridge along the ECML, this turned out to be fantastic day and as well as what was expected, two Class 33s, a 37, 47, 50 and 57 also passed through!
