Description
Stamford in Lincolnshire is one of those special places in Britain. This DVD is devoted to its origins, its history, its buildings, its churches, its streets and its characters. We see the town through rare archive films from the 1950s through to the 1970s, as well as with contemporary footage narrated by an official tour guide. Bonus feature: Burghley House.
Stamford is located in the southern-most corner of Lincolnshire with close borders to Rutland, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Many of its ancient buildings were built from the famous local stone from Barnack with roof tiles form Collyweston. This DVD is devoted to Stamford’s origins, its history, buildings, churches, streets and its characters.
We see film of street scenes and of carnivals and fairs; visit by Queen Elizebeth II, a parade with the mayor of the town, a Stamford School Speech Day and footage of Bluecoat school. Contemporary footage shows the town as it is today and explores its richly coloured buildings and architecture. We follow one of the town guides with twenty-five years’ experience in guiding visitors around the unique streets with a history second to none. We see the great stately home of Burghley House and its magnificent architecture and deer park.
Enjoy this unique look at a town which is steeped in history, but looks forward to a bright future as one of the best stone-built towns in Britain.
